I would rather be embarrassed for saying something stupid than to continue walking around with an incorrect idea in my head. This explains why say a lot of stupid things. I have learned a lot from giving incorrect advice or saying incorrect things and then being corrected.

These kinds of experiments are great to make. On the front-end we often just try things out in the console.

This doesn't seem consistent with your desire to live longer. Have you checked out statistics of motorcycle deaths? I completely understand your desire to have fun, but at least wait until you have a backup copy!

I agree that the Air could use more RAM, although the tradeoff isn't as clear-cut as you make it sound. My previous laptop was a 13" MacBook Pro with a 2nd generation Intel X25-M SSD. Except for boot time, it was slightly faster than my Air. But a slightly slower computer that you take everywhere is better than a slightly faster computer that you leave at home. The trivial inconvenience of a larger, heavier laptop can significantly reduce your productivity. Like in photography, the best device is the one you have with you. An iPhone or iPad is even smaller, but neither of those have a full-size physical keyboard (AKA the fastest brain-machine interface currently available).

Of course, not everyone needs the same size-performance tradeoff as me. I don't care if you get a MacBook Air or not. I simply want to stress that expensive computers are worth it.

MacBook Air suffers from insufficient memory. It was made to be small, not to handle programs. Why do people think that the thinnest, lightest possible computer is going to handle the needs of a power user?

Hiya.

I also have a 11" Air and i completely echo your points. The advances than have been made are astounding. While the changes generation to generation are tiny, they add up to alot!

I got my first MacBook in 2006 (first gen MacBook ) and its still running now, i'm expecting the Air i have today to still be running in at least 3 years time.

The profile picture of the two stacked on top of each other is great! Shows how far the tech has come, pretty astonishing. My first laptop was an iBook G3 back in 2002. At the time it seemed really fast to me. It's pretty amazing how fast things change. Honestly I use my Blackberry smart-phone for most laptop type things I used to do these days. Social media, reading blogs, even word processing. I love having a computer in my pocket.

Hi Geoff,

You might not remember me, but I went to high school with you and ran cross country and track. Anyway, great post. eReading is a topic I love to read and talk about. I love reading, and I've even started writing my own fiction. I picked up the Sony eReader when it first came out. I love books, the smell, the feel, but I've found that I love reading on an eReader even more. It's great having multiple titles in a device that weighs less than most of my paperback books. That Instapaper site looks like exactly what I've been looking for. I read a lot of author's blogs and stuff, and this will be a great tool. thanks for sharing it in this post. Anyways, hope all is well and it's cool to see that you have a site going. I'll have to read through your old posts. Have a good one Mead distance running teammate! :)

Windows has far less issues than Ubuntu for the average user. The average user can't play his games on it for starters, and there are probably issues with playing mp3 files because of licences or something.

Thanks for letting me know about this.

I found out that Dreamhost recently added a rootkit detector, which is incorrectly flagging my lscolors generator. It should be fixed tomorrow.

Edit: It's fixed now.

This generator seems broken? It just redirects back to this page. Is it broken or just plain decommissioned? It's hard to tell.

I've searched all over Google and this seems to be the only generator/preview tool for LSCOLORS available.

I think Firefox adding it to the blacklist is fair enough. After all, as you post-submit message states, "this was a test". It makes sense to run the test under real-world conditions: when a user is evaluating whether a site in the wild is a phishing-site or not, they have the various cues presented by the browser available to help them.

If Firefox didn't blacklist it, and a user fell for the ploy, then that user could complaint to Mozilla that "your built-in phishing protection can't be very good if it protect me from this"! They would be underselling their feature.
